About the motorzoo 1500Wh 48V LiFePO4 Battery
The motorzoo 1500Wh 48V LiFePO4 battery is a 48 Volt, 30 Amp hour power source that has been designed and built to meet our high demands.
It has been designed and configured to be fit for purpose for the full range of motorzoo electric outboard motors.
Our demands are for a powerful, safe, and reliable high quality power source for the full range of motorzoo electric outboard motors.
Specific characteristics of the 1500Wh 48V LiFePO4 battery include the following:
Grade A Cells
Not all lithium battery cells are the same standard (or ‘grade’).
Grade A cells, may cost more, but have a much longer life.
Also, Grade A cells have better performance, when compared to lower cell grades.
Also, Grade A cells have better performance, when compared to lower cell grades.
Our battery cells are rated for 2,500 discharge/charge cycles.
Fast Charging
The batteries must be able to take high current loads while charging, otherwise it takes too long.
This battery has a rated charging current of 15 Amps. And a maximum continuous charging current at 30 Amps.
Powerful Discharging
The motors demand high current loads, and the batteries must be able to deliver.
This battery has a rated discharge current of 30 Amps. And a maximum continuous discharge current at 60 Amps.
App Control
It is important to be able to monitor the battery state, and behaviour.
Our LiFePO4 batteries feature a bluetooth Smartphone App for monitoring / diagnostics.
This also removes the need for a display panel on the case, improving watertight integrity.
Smart Management
A Battery Management System (BMS) controls and regulates the individual battery cells inside.
And Our BMS supports multiple units charging concurrently or individually, and prevent units from charging (leaking to) each other.
The BMS also protects against:
- Short circuit. Which is especially important for marine application
- Excess Charging. Which is a known cause of hazard in ternary lithium batteries.
- Excess Temperature. Which can cause permanent damage to the battery cells.
- Excess Current. Which can cause damage to downstream electrical components.
Special Features of the motorzoo 1500Wh 48V LiFePO4 Battery
The motorzoo 1500Wh 48V LiFePO4 Battery is made especially for marine environments.
It is a, safe, powerful, high performance power unit with customised features and an innovative design, as follows:
- Hermetically Sealed. This means there is no possibility of water ingress into the battery compartment.
- No cooling system required. Internal temperatures managed by the BMS, and monitored through Smartphone App.
- In-built Safety. Protections against: Short circuit; excess charge; excess discharge; excess current; excess temperature.
LiFePO4 Batteries are inherently non-reactive to water, and therefore much safer then LI-Ion batteries. - Long Life. Grade A LiFePO4 Cells are rated for 2500 life cycles (charge/discharge), within six sigma probability.
What do you need to know about LiFePO4 Batteries?
What is LiFePO4?
LiFePO4 (pronounced life-poh-four) batteries are made from a Lithium (Li) Iron (Fe) Phosphate (PO4) composition.
When compared to the original Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) cells:
- LiFePO4 cells are are quite a bit heavier, about double on average;
- And they have a lower energy density, in kWh per kg (between 10% to 50%, depending on the specification).
But LiFePO4 cells are also much safer, being inert when exposed to water, and not being prone to runaway reactions and fire.
These points make LiFePO4 cells more ideal for use in aquatic and marine environments.
Power Considerations.
It is important that the battery power supply be matched to the power specifications of the motor it is intended to support.
Improper ‘tuning’ of batteries to the motors that they drive may result in damage to the battery.
The battery may potentially be ‘overloaded’ by the power demands of the electric motor, if it is not powerful enough:
- A 30 Amp hour (48v30Ah) LiFePO4 Battery will typically be able to deliver a peak current of up to 60 Amps.
- So, a minimum of one 48v30Ah battery would be required for a 48 Volt 2.2kW motor that draws up to about 45 Amps
(like the 2200W 3hp Electric Outboard from motorzoo). - A single 30Ah battery will deliver peak current of 60A for about 30 minutes.
(Note that this represents the minimum operating time, as it assumes full throttle for the whole time.)
Example.
Using the motorzoo 2200W 3hp electric outboard (the largest of our budget range) as an illustration:
- The 2200W 3hp motor has a power rating of 2.2 kilowatts.
- This motor draws a peak current of 45 Amps, and requires a battery of sufficient voltage to meet that requirement.
- This is why the motor uses a 48V LiFePO4 power supply. Smaller units would not provide the current required.
- And any battery of more than 48V would require special safety certification to work with.
So 48V provides the sweet spot for power delivery.
And we can see how important it is that the battery power supply can deliver the peak current of the electric motor that it powers.
Otherwise there could be damage to the battery management system.
Operating Safety
At motorzoo we are obsessed with operating safety.
This is why we prefer LiFePO4 batteries over ternary Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) Batteries:
- LiFePO4 batteries are much safer to use than Li-Ion batteries, especially in an aquatic environment.
- We also prefer connections and cables with the highest water resistance rating.
