About the motorzoo 48V-050 LiFePO4 Battery
- Grade A Cells. Not all lithium battery cells are the same standard (or ‘grade’).
Grade A cells, may cost more, but have a much longer life, and better performance, when compared to lower cell grades. - Fast Charging. The batteries must be able to take high current loads while charging, otherwise it takes too long.
Rated charging current of 25 Amps.Maximum continuous charging current at 50 Amps. - Powerful Discharging. The motors demand high current loads, and the batteries must be able to deliver .
Rated discharge current of 50 Amps. Maximum continuous discharge current at 100 Amps. - App Control. Smartphone interface. It is important to be able to monitor the battery state, and behaviour.
Our LiFePO4 batteries feature a bluetooth Smartphone App for monitoring / diagnostics. - Smart Management. Battery Management Systems (BMS) control and regulate the individual battery cells inside.
Ours support multiple units charging concurrently or individually, and prevent units from charging (leaking to) each other.
Special Features of the motorzoo 48V-050 LiFePO4 Battery
- Hermetically Sealed. This means there is no possibility of water ingress into the battery compartment.
- No cooling system required. Internal temperatures managed by the BMS, and monitored through Smartphone App.
- In-built Safety. Protections against: Short circuit; excess charge; excess discharge; excess current; excess temperature.
- Long Life. Grade A LiFePO4 Cells are rated for 2500 life cycles (charge/discharge), within six sigma probability.
What do you need to know about LiFePO4 Batteries?
What Is LiFePO4.
When compared to the original Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) cells:
- LiFePO4 cells are are quite a bit heavier, about double on average;
- And they have a lower energy density, in kWh per kg (between 10% to 50%, depending on the specification).
Power considerations
The battery may potentially be ‘overloaded’ by the power demands of the electric motor, if it is not powerful enough:
- A 50 Amp hour (48v50Ah) LiFePO4 Battery will typically be able to deliver a peak current of up to 100 Amps.
- So, a minimum of one 48v50Ah battery would be required for a 48 Volt 3kW motor, (that draws up to about 65 Amps).
- A single 50Ah battery will deliver peak current of 65A for about 45 minutes.
(Note that this represents the minimum operating time, as it assumes full throttle for the whole time.)
Example
- The 48V-03×0 has a power rating of 3.0 kilowatts.
- This motor draws a peak current of 65 Amps, and requires a battery of sufficient voltage to meet that requirement.
- This is why the motor uses a 48V LiFePO4 power supply. Smaller units would not provide the current required.
- And any battery of more than 48V would require special safety certification to work with.
Otherwise there could be damage to the battery management system.
Operating Safety
At motorzoo we are obsessed with operating safety.
This is why we prefer LiFePO4 batteries over ternary Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) Batteries:
LiFePO4 batteries are much safer to use than Li-Ion batteries, especially in an aquatic environment.
We also prefer connections and cables with the highest water resistance rating.
